Zhang Huan

born 1965, in An Yang City, He Nan Province, China; lives and works in Shanghai, China and New York, United States

Zhang Huan is best known for the provocative and often physically grueling endurance-based performances that he began in the early 1990s when he formed a collective with other student artists in a slum of Beijing that came to be known as the East Village. Zhang has stated that his very physical performance projects provide fundamental and direct engagements with society. What began as intimate personal performances have developed into large-scale projects that incorporate the participation of others. Zhang earned his BA from Henan University in Kaifeng in 1988 and his MA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1993.
