Zhang Dali
born 1963, in Harbin, China; lives and works in Beijing, China
Zhang Dali is one of the leading artists to emerge from China in the 1990s. He uses painting, graffiti, sculpture, photography installation, and performance to explore reality, social issues, and the human condition. His photographs from the 1990s highlight the tenuous dynamic between construction and destruction inherent in urban renewal projects and serve as a critique of Beijing’s aggressive gentrification program during that period. Zhang studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, graduating in 1987.
