Xu Bing

Xu Bing’s ruminations on the indelible relationship between language and society have been an ongoing in his work since the 1980s, when he was first recognized for his now iconic installation of 4000 laboriously carved, invented Chinese characters imprinted on scrolls in Book From the Sky. The artist received a BFA in printmaking from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1981 and an MFA in 1987. In 1990 Xu immigrated to the United States following a residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1999 he was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to society in relation to his work in printmaking and calligraphy. Xu subsequently returned to Beijing to serve as the Vice President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2008 to 2014 and began to divide his time between Beijing and New York.
