Tseng Kwong Chi
born 1950, Hong Kong, China; died 1990, New York, United States
Born in Hong Kong, Tseng Kwong Chi was an integral member of the New York avant-garde art scene in the 1980s. During his brief, but prolific, career, the artist created over 100,000 photographs. He counted fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Bill T. Jones, and others as close friends and collaborators. His photographs not only document the rich mosaic of the American landscape but also intimately portray a dynamic moment in New York’s cultural history. Tseng died of AIDS-related complications in 1990. His photographs have been exhibited widely in international exhibitions and are included in major public museums and private collections all over the world.
