Shilpa Gupta
born 1976, in Mumbai, India; lives and works in Mumbai, India
Shilpa Gupta works across installation, performance, sound, video, sculpture, and other mediums. Her diverse practice spans the divide between real and virtual worlds in an attempt to decode the mechanisms by which people, places, and ideologies are defined and categorized, and fill the subsequent gaps in translation that occur in language, nationhood, identity, and religion. Shifting between object-based commodities and participatory experiences, Gupta creates situations that actively involve the viewer. Her interdisciplinary practice reflects a consumerist culture that is increasingly engaged with social media, the Internet, and technology. Gupta earned a BFA in sculpture at the Sir JJ School of Art in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1997.
