Rahraw Omarzad
born 1964, in Kabul, Afghanistan; lives and works in Frankfurt, Germany
Rahraw Omarzad is an artist, curator, author, and activist. His photography and video art explore themes of renewal and evolution in Afghanistan. He is known for his active role as a mentor to many young artists from his country. Omarzad graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Kabul University and taught there for many years. In 2004, he founded the Center for Contemporary Arts Afghanistan (CCAA) and in 2006 established the Women’s Art Center there. Both organizations were unique in Afghanistan in their missions to promote peace, justice, democracy, and empowerment through the arts. Having been imprisoned by the Taliban in its first regime, Omarzad fled to Europe following the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021.
