Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba
born 1968, in Tokyo, Japan; lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba was born to mixed Vietnamese and Japanese parentage. He received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992 and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1994, before establishing his studio in Ho Chi Minh City. Since the 1990s, the artist has commemorated Vietnam’s struggle to move beyond the trauma of the Vietnam War and has reflected the country’s push toward modernization through his use of cyclos (rickshaws), a once popular, but now outmoded, form of transportation.
