Hong Lei is one of the leading artists to have emerged from the New Photography movement in China in the 1990s. The artist graduated from the Nanjing Academy of Arts in 1987, where he studied traditional lacquer painting. His lush color photographs are inspired by traditional Chinese painting and serve as a rebuke to the increasing influence of the West on contemporary Chinese art and culture.
