Hai Bo

born 1962, in Changchun, China; lives and works in Beijing, China

Hai Bo is best known for his nostalgic photographic images that poignantly capture the shifting sociopolitical landscape of contemporary China. Hai Bo began his photographic practice in the 1980s, earning a degree from the print department of the Jilin Art Institute in 1984. His photographs often document the passage of time through the changing geographical landscape of contemporary China. He first came to prominence in the 1990s with a series of photo diptychs that juxtaposed found photographs of people taken during the Cultural Revolution with staged photographs by the artist that featured the surviving subjects—whom he had tracked down using the found photographs—positioned to mimic the original.
