Chen Shaoxiong
Born 1962, in Shantou, China; died 2016 in Beijing, China
Chen Shaoxiong's conceptual art practice employs a variety of media—including photography, video, installation, and traditional ink painting—to investigate China’s complicated relationship with its sociopolitical past and its rapidly evolving present. Chen, along with Lin Yilin, Liang Juhui, and Xu Tan, founded the Guangzhou-based Big Tail Elephant Group, one of the leading avant-garde artist groups in China from the 1990s. In the early 2000s, the artist began working with traditional ink painting to create stop-motion animation videos.
