Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook
born 1957, in Trat, Thailand; lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook is one of the leading video artists from Thailand. The artist received a BFA and MFA in graphic arts from Silpakorn University in 1986 and an MA from Germany’s Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig in 1994. She has been a professor of art at Chiang Mai University since 1987. Rasdjarmrearnsook began her practice as a sculptor and printmaker but shifted her focus toward video beginning in 1998. Her subject matter is based on dichotomies, such as the relationship between life and death and the search for autonomy within cultural constraints. More recently, her practice has encompassed notions of identity and difference through the lens of class hierarchies and regional idiosyncrasies.
