Almagul Menlibayeva
born 1969, in Almaty, Kazakhstan; lives and works in Germany and Kazakhstan
Kazakh video and performance artist Almagul Menlibayeva studied at the Academy of Art and Theater in Almaty from 1987 to 1992. Regarded as one of the leading artists from Central Asia, Menlibayeva’s surreal narratives often address the uprooting and dislocation of civilizations. The artist examines the convergence of traditional and contemporary cultures and conceives mythological narratives based on Soviet cultural traditions and the nomadic heritage of the steppes of Kazakhstan. She often uses industrial ruins from the region’s communist past during the Soviet era as a backdrop for her work.
