Ah Xian

Ah Xian’s meticulously crafted figurative sculptures use traditional Chinese decorative arts practices to deconstruct the relationship between history, cultural heritage, and identity. Self-trained as an artist, Ah left China for Australia in 1989 to participate in a residency at the University of Tasmania and applied for asylum to Australia following the events at Tiananmen Square later that year. He was granted asylum in 1995. The artist is best known for his China China series comprising forty porcelain busts.
